Idebenone is an organic, vitamin-like natural compound with properties similar CoQ10. It is an antioxidant and plays an important role in the production of cellular energy.

It has been used for years as a drug for treating various ailments but has only recently been used in skin care products. A few companies now marketed it as a hot, new miracle ingredient rather than as an older one that has found a new market.

Where did it come from?

Researchers have studied CoQ10 for its many therapeutic benefits, that were mainly related to heart disease, free radicals damage and brain disorders. During these studies, researchers made and tested many variations. Most proved ineffective, unsafe or both. Idebenone was one of the exceptions and is now even touted as a better Co Q10.

Other studies proven it to be 30 to 100 times more effective than vitamin E in eliminating free radicals in various cells of the body.

More recently CoQ10 has been shown to improve the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. Because of this, a number of wrinkle cream manufacturers decided that CoQ10-related compounds might provide a similar benefit. However, there is still work to be done to prove whether or not idebenone is better than CoQ10 as a wrinkle fighter. Researchers have confirmed that they both cause multiple effects on the cells. But, despite their many similarities many important differences do still exist. Until longer-term comparison studies are done we won't know which one is better.

This kind of uncertainty is very common with new, in demand wrinkle products. Fortunately the uncertainty has mostly to do with effectiveness rather than safety. Most experts agree that this compound is very safe. It has been in use since the '80s, retains an excellent safety record and iis sold as a supplement in the US with no need for a prescription.

Should you try it?

There is no harm in trying this product but you might also want to wait for more studies of its effectiveness. However, if your current products are not producing great results or even adverse effects (such as retinoids sometimes can)you might try idebenone.

It is known to be quite expensive when used as an ingredient in wrinkle creams, even though as a single ingredient it is not very expensive - often the case for new and aggressively marketed skin care treatments. You could wait until the prices drop or you could even make your own cream. This ensures freshness (since oxygen will quickly cause it to become ineffective).

You might also consider comparing it with CoQ10. You could just apply one of the creams to each side of your face and compare the results. A test like this should probably last six weeks for results.
